Tips for your first appointment

  • Book a long appointment. ME/CFS can’t be covered in 10 minutes.
  • Bring a one-page summary: when you got sick, what triggered it, your main symptoms, what makes them worse, tests you’ve had and medications you take.
  • Bring evidence: a few weeks of symptom tracking and your lean test numbers.
  • Use our GP script for tests and referrals to ask about.
  • Asking about LDN? See what the evidence says first. It’s cheap and generally safe, but not a sure thing.
  • Telehealth can save a lot of energy for follow-up appointments. Ask whether the doctor offers it.

Finding a doctor elsewhere in Australia

Many doctors across Australia can help with ME/CFS. Good places to look:

  • Emerge Australia: their online directory is listed above, and their nurses can also help. Call 1800 865 321 (press 1) or visit emerge.org.au.
  • ME/CFS Australia and state-based ME/CFS groups often know local doctors.
  • Compounding pharmacies that make LDN can often tell you which local doctors prescribe it.
  • Support groups: other patients are often the best source of local recommendations.
